The second task of the Study Committee is to determine appropriate boundaries for a historic district. Below are shown three possibilities, each with varying parameters. The appropriateness of each of the following boundary proposals should be considered and one of them selected.
Factors in determining historic district boundaries The boundaries of a historic district may be defined by natural features and edges; they are logical boundaries that echo the images residents have of their community. A district may also be based on the early settlement patterns in a community. Although this may not be apparent, referring to early maps and descriptions may reveal important differentiations. Boundaries may also be established to protect a historic area from development threats. Such boundaries should recognize the economic forces that create the need for development and try to accommodate growth and change while protecting the historic character.
