The annual conference of the Michigan Association of Planning (MAP) took place in downtown Detroit October 20 through 22. It was a great opportunity for planning students to meet planners from around the state. An EMU reception was held at the Volt Bar at the RenCen. It was a great time to catch up with some old friends and meet some new ones.

A number of EMU people gave presentations at the conference. They included Andrea Brown (MAP Executive Director), Dave Schneider (Next Big Wireless Wave), Jim Schafer (Planning Ethics), and Norm and Ilene Tyler (Place Making in the Well-Designed Community).

Planning a new town in China

This email recently arrived from Andrew Armbruster, a graduate from our undergraduate Planning program who is now in a graduate Planning program at Tongji University in Shanghai...

Hi Professor Tyler,

I hope everything is going well for you, your family and our program.

I've been meaning to write you for the past few weeks but it's been hard to find the time.  I want to let you know about something exciting.  I am now involved in the design of a 5 square mile site, which is part of a very old Chinese city.  For all intents and purposes this can be considered a new city, though technically it will be considered a satellite district.  The site will be home to around 100,000 people.  Our team is quite small, with four people working on the project including myself.  It's pretty fast paced, with a three month deadline for the conceptual plan, but this is normal over here.  Luckily, the design philosophy of my group closely parallels my own, and since this is a so-called 'model development', we're free from a lot of the regulatory constraints (after the conceptual plan, we might also develop the regulatory plan!).  Therefore, though perhaps there are other factors which might hinder the process, it's an opportunity to put good design theory into practice.

This basically represents the essence of why I came to China to study urban design, as it's the culmination of everything I've wanted to do since I arrived.  I feel the responsibility is enormous.  I'm going to devote all my effort to this project over the next three months.  There's not really many details to be given at this point, but I'm looking forward to sharing the results with you.

Andrew

Anya Dale and Washtenaw Avenue

The online magazine Concentrate recently published the article shown below on recent Planning program graduate Anya Dale and her work as project manager of the "Reimagine Washtenaw Avenue" project. Good work, Anya.

Student photos on APA web site

PLACE students had their picture taken while on a field trip to McKenna Associates in Northville. This picture made it to the APA student web site, along with information on the club.
Find it at: http://www.planning.org/students/pso/activities.htm

Also, undergrad Mark Ferrall was featured on a version of the APA Interact site, shown below. This was used to advertise APA's continuing program to give one year of free membership to students in APA accredited planning programs. If you would like a free membership, email or see Norm Tyler at ntyler@emich.edu for information.

Picnic Time!

Planning students Shannon, Jessie and David

The school year has begun, and that means it was time for Planning program students, faculty, and alums to get together for our annual "Picnic at Norm's House," a chance to catch up on what's been happening. The date was Tuesday, September 7th, the day before classes begin. More than 30 people, including many new students, showed up to get to know each other or to catch up on what has been happening during the summer.

The evening was warm and breezy. Hot dogs and brats, potato salad, Asian rice, shrimp, watermelon, drinks, chocolate mice, and other delectables were eaten in the backyard. It was a good kick-off to a new year.

Planning crossword puzzle

Norm Tyler has created a Planning Crossword. When you tire of homework and are looking for a distraction, give it a try. You can download a copy. The first three people who complete it correctly will each receive a book bag.
